Our Work

Welcome to Actors East, a blackbox theatre and acting studio established in 2018 in response to the high rental costs faced by creatives in London. Our foundation is built on offering affordable rehearsal and development space, fostering a community of actors, writers, directors, and artists. From this community, we've developed a range of projects and initiatives that highlight our commitment to accessibility and new talent in the arts. This portfolio showcases our diverse range of work, including student productions, in-house plays, progressive workshops, and support programs for emerging artists. As a home for new writing and creativity, Actors East continues to lower the barrier to entry in the arts.

Project: Casserole

"Casserole" marks a significant milestone as the first in-house play transitioning from Actors East's group theatre approach. Originating from a series of workshops and work-in-progress sessions, "Casserole" has grown through collaborative story investigation method. This innovative piece was honored with a transfer to the Arcola Theatre in March 2024.

Project: Writers East (Playwriting Program, 2023)

Writers East, in its inaugural year, is a groundbreaking playwriting program for 1st time working class playwrights, supported by the Arts Council.

Out of 100 submissions, 12 writers were selected for a rigorous week-long workshop. From this, four playwrights advanced to a three-month training program, culminating in an industry showcase. This initiative marks their first step into professional playwriting, guiding them from a nascent idea to a complete one-act play.

Project: Scene Night (Monthly Theatre Event)

Scene Night, a monthly event, showcases the essence of new work and acting craft without the pressure of industry scrutiny. This event, devoid of agents and casting directors, focuses purely on the artistry of performance. It's a fertile ground for discovering new writing talent, leading to potential inclusion in our development system, which ranges from notes sessions to full runs in our blackbox theatre at Dawson.

Project: Pay What You Can Scheme (Studio Access Initiative)
